Modern Warfare re-imagined

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare is a re-imagining of the entire story of the popular action game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. A half-prequel, half-reboot to the Modern Warfare franchise, this game will also return the series to a more grounded and realistic military shooter after a few titles of futuristic entries. Also, gone are the advanced mobility mechanics and the hero-shooter aspects introduced in the previous Call of Duty games. Players in this game will have different operators to play in multiplayer but with no special powers. Moreover, Modern Warfare will have a complete single-player campaign well worth playing.

Brutal yet beautiful story

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare brings back Captain Price—although he plays a far greater role here than in COD 4. There will also be some other familiar faces that will make a comeback. However, most of the characters are new. As with other Modern Warfare games and the two Black Ops title, the story of this game takes place in modern times. Most of the story takes place in the fictional country of Urzikstan, but some of the campaigns will also take place elsewhere, including the UK

The game will largely take place in the present time but will occasionally dip into some backstories. Players who have been playing with Modern Warfare titles before will also notice that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare often nods to the past games. In fact, there are many sequences in COD 4 that the game mirrors that it looks to be relying on these moments instead of creating new sequences.

Nevertheless, Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare maintains a tense, challenging, brutal, yet beautiful experience from start to finish. Although, it is Call of Duty, so don’t expect a profound or emotional story. What you will get is an action-packed shooter with lots of military jargon, violence, and surprisingly-relatable characters.

Revamped multiplayer campaigns

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare's multiplayer campaigns come in two halves: the competitive online multiplayer campaign and the co-operative special ops. Progression carries over between these two, with bits of the story also crossing over.

Additionally, there were also some changes to the game map. Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare abandons the three-lane map structure of the past games in favor of a more open-ended map. Many of these maps are littered with camping positions, which, when combined with brutal time-to-kill (TTK), can lead to more cautious plays.

The gameplay also comes with some nice little additions, like the ability to mount your gun on most surfaces. There are also some cool changes in the game structure, such as ridding the Pick 10 system to allow players to customize their loadouts in much greater depth. The customization also comes with a gunsmith system that lets players tinker with their weapons.

Both multiplayer and Special Ops also now come with a whole bunch of matches beyond the traditional game modes. These modes are fast-paced and incredibly competitive, giving you and the other players in your team a real blast. All in all, the sheer breadth of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare's multiplayer campaign gives the players an astounding amount of stuff to do.

COD returning to its roots

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare returns the Modern Warfare series to its roots with plenty of nods to the 2007 original. However, that does not say that the game isn’t fresh. While it brings back some of the game aspects that players have come to love, it also adds new elements to keep the game exciting. It has a strong campaign, tons of multiplayer options, and a break from zombies co-op with the return of Special Ops. It also boasts photo-realistic graphics, making the entire game look simply stunning on any platform. It also has an excellent weapon sound design, resulting in good gunplay. All in all, the game is a slickly-produced and well-constructed military shooter.

PROS

  • Strong campaign
  • Lots of multiplayer options
  • Photo-realistic graphics
  • Good gunplay

CONS

  • Some events in the game are historically inaccurate
  • Some image brightness issues
  • Terrible skill-based matchmaking
  • Netcode and lag compensation issues
